As a result of a complaint, the Inquiries, Complaints and Reports Committee decided to caution Dr. Amir Seif Guorgui as follows:

• You missed the clear signs of the patient’s infection, and were repeatedly dismissive of the concerns of the patient and her family.

• Your conduct in this matter demonstrated a lack of clinical knowledge, understanding and judgment that reflected poorly on the Ontario dental profession.

• Your conduct in this matter exposed the patient to serious harm. It was fortunate that the patient’s infection was eventually managed, did not spread, and did not result in more disastrous consequences.

• You failed to demonstrate any insight into the deficiencies of your post-operative management in this case. This was particularly disappointing given that the patient experienced a serious and ongoing infection, requiring months of treatment.

• This was a complicated extraction procedure. You should have provided the patient and her family with the option of being referred to a specialist (oral and maxillofacial surgeon).

• It is expected that you learn from the course ordered by the ICR and that your future post-operative management of patients will meet the requisite standard.
