Clinical Competency: Operative (Restorative) Dentistry

Restorative dentistry is central to maintaining oral health by managing dental caries and restoring tooth structure in a manner that supports function, longevity and patient wellbeing. Sound clinical judgment, accurate assessment and evidence-informed decision-making are essential to providing restorative care that meets the standard of care.

These restorative dentistry courses provide practical guidance on contemporary approaches to caries management and direct restorations relevant to general dental practice in Ontario. The content was developed by faculty from Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry in partnership with the RCDSO, to support dentists throughout their careers, strengthening treatment planning and execution, documenting care in accordance with professional, legal and ethical expectations, and identifying opportunities to improve restorative outcomes in everyday practice.

 Fundamentals of Restorative Dentistry - Caries Management and Direct Restorations

 Course Description

Fundamentals of Restorative Dentistry provides dentists with foundational knowledge and practical guidance for managing dental caries and providing direct restorations in accordance with the standard of care. The course emphasizes evidence-informed principles, clinical decision-making, and documentation practices that support safe, effective, and defensible restorative dentistry.

Participants will explore assessment and management of caries, restorative treatment planning, direct restorative techniques, and documentation requirements. Emphasis is placed on applying professional judgment and understanding legal and ethical responsibilities related to restorative care.

Learning Objectives

Upon successful completion of this course, participants will be better able to:

  • Identify the essential principles of caries management and direct restorations required to practice to the standard of care.
  • Describe the core clinical and documentation requirements for restorative dentistry related to caries management and direct restorations.

Course Description

Applied Restorative Dentistry – Caries Management and Direct Restorations builds on the content delivered in the Fundamentals of Restorative Dentistry course. A comprehensive case study illustrates the key elements and content required to practice to the standard of care. Focused activities provide a step-by-step guide to participants as they work through management of caries via restorative dentistry. Small groups encourage questions and discussion.

Learning Objectives

Upon successful completion of this course, participants will be better able to:

  • Demonstrate application of the essential requirements to maintain the standard of care in caries management and direct restorations.
  • List the essential charting elements and content required to satisfy professional, legal, and ethical expectations for documenting restorative dentistry care related to caries management and direct restorations.
  • Identify deficiencies and opportunities to strengthen their own practice by applying principles used in this course to improve restorative dentistry outcomes.
